Honouring Indigenous Lands
While identifying significant lands throughout Turtle Island, the Anishinaabek Land Trust will collaborate with Indigenous communities to assess the present condition and significance of these places. Committed to enhancing, preserving, and respecting historic, present, and future Indigenous land connections, the trust will abstain from pursuing any tract of land that could be of importance to another Indigenous community.
Some considerations:
- Are these lands a part of a community or nation historically?
- Are there features, resources, or relationships on or with the lands of interest that a current community or nation is interested in?
- Are there any communities or nations that have any desires to claim the lands of interest in the future?
With this baseline information we can better assess the current state or situation of these lands, while at the same time gaining a better understanding of the original relationships and people of the lands in question.
