Our Mission

The Anishinaabek Land Trust exists to restore relationships with the land, recover original governance, and create space for Anishinaabek teachings and worldviews to be lived again. The land, waters, plants, animals, and all living beings have always been teachers. They continue to show us how to live in balance, how to care for one another, and how responsibility is shared.

Through lands held outside of the Indian Act, the Land Trust creates opportunities for First Nations people to reconnect with language, teachings, and land-based responsibilities, while also helping settlers better understand the original spirit and intent of the treaties. These treaties were rooted in sharing the land, not owning or controlling it. The Land Trust provides a place where this understanding can be practiced, with First Nations guiding how land is used, respected, and cared for.

Our Vision

2

Our vision is a future where original teachings, governance, and land-based knowledge are carried forward in modern ways.

We envision lands where Anishinaabek knowledge systems and western science are both valued through true two-eyed seeing, and where decisions are guided by relationship, responsibility, and respect for the land.

In this future, First Nations people are able to recover and practice ways of knowing that were interrupted, while settlers are invited to learn what it means to live on shared land in a good way.

A Place for Everyone

The Anishinaabek Land Trust was created with all peoples in mind. It is a place for learning, relationship-building, and shared responsibility, guided by First Nations knowledge and original treaty principles. It is not built on hierarchy, ownership, or control. Instead, it creates space for people to come together, listen to the land, and understand how to use and share it in a respectful way.
