Memorandum of Understanding
Leora Berman (COO – The Land Between Charity) and Gary Williams (TLB Council and former chief and counsellor from Curve Lake First Nation) developed the idea of a traditional governance land trust, which was supported by the Land Between council as a deep act of reconciliation. The Land Between charity has been incubating and supporting the making of the Anishinaabek Land Trust and will continue to develop the Land Trust until it stands as an independent organization with capacity, at which time the ties between the two entities will be cut to ensure that the Land Trust stands freely and without unnecessary influence or encumbrances from others.
Therefore, the Anishinaabek Land Trust Effort/Circle and The Land Between charity have a Memorandum of Understanding which clearly states that there will be a dissolution of any partnerships between the two groups once the land trust can be self-sustaining. Again, this means that upon independence, the Land Between will have no influence related to the operations of the land trust.
The planning and direction of the Anishinaabek Land Trust will be decided on by an elected council, through a talking circle. This council solely will represent the land trust in any and all agreements.
This MOU was proposed by Leora Berman, COO of the Land Between, as way to ensure there would not be any form of self interest on behalf of the charity at any point in the duration of the Land Trust, and as a measure to ensure these acts of reconciliation are given without strings.
