Gifts of Land
The Anishinaabek Land Trust is dedicated to preserving the Original Teachings of Turtle Island. We can achieve this by having access to lands across Ontario and more broadly, across Canada. The opportunity to acquire lands through your donation is the ultimate act of solidarity. The land you provide to the land trust will be free from the Indian Act of Canada and therefore allows Indigenous people to reconnect with their natural landscape without any restrictions. Your gift of land may also qualify for the Ecological Gifts Program.
Ecological Gifts Program
Due to urban development and deforestation, biodiversity and natural landscapes are at risk in Canada. Although, many of these important habitats and natural features can be found on private properties today. Landowners can play a vital role in the preservation of valuable natural environments and habitat conservation.
At the Anishinaabek Land Trust, the Ecological Gifts Program (EGP) provides a way for Canadians to give back to the original inhabitants of the land. Indigenous ways of life involve a healthy and active relationship with the land in which they came from. As we know, with the implementation of the Indian Act and associated reservation system, many groups of Indigenous people do not have the proper amount or access to these lands in which they require to live a holistic life.
What is an ecological gift?
An ecological gift (eco gift) is a donation of land or a right to land to an approved charitable organization. An eco gift may either be a donation of the fee simple title to a parcel of land, or a gift involving certain rights and restrictions of uses to the land sometimes known as a covenant, easement or servitude.
The benefits of becoming an eco gift donor are the significant tax advantages that go along with the comfort of knowing your land is protected in perpetuity. Eco gift donors receive a charitable receipt from the recipient for the fair market value of their donated ecological gift that can be applied against their net annual taxable income.
